Summary of Evidence
Treatment of Vitreous Haemorrhage
Vitrectomy
In patients with Type 1 Diabetes, there was a clear advantage of early vitrectomy for vitreous haemorrhage. No such advantage was found in Type 2 Diabetes.(DRVS, 1985).{Early vitrectomy for severe vitreous hemorrhage in diabetic retinopathy. Two-year results of a randomized trial. Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study report 2. The Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study Research Group. Arch Ophthalmol. 1985 Nov;103(11):1644-52.}
Intravitreal Anti-VEGF injections
In patients with vitreous hemorrhage from proliferative diabetic retinopathy, eyes receiving initial vitrectomy with PRP had faster recovery of vision over 24 weeks when baseline VA was worse than 20/800 and faster vitreous hemorrhage clearance vs initial treatment with intravitreal aflibercept.(Protocol AB, 2021).{Glassman AR, Beaulieu WT, Maguire MG, Antoszyk AN, Chow CC, Elman MJ, Jampol LM, Salehi-Had H, Sun JK; DRCR Retina Network.
