Main finding: Combination ranibizumab + vPDT is superior to ranibizumab monotherapy in BCVA and complete polyp regression while requiring fewer injections

 

  • Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of combination therapy of ranibizumab and verteporfin PDT with ranibizumab monotherapy in PCV
  • Study type: Randomized controlled trial
  • Condition: Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy

Participants: ≥18yo symptomatic macular PCV, BCVA 20/32-20/320 [6/9.5-6/96]

Intervention:

 

Group 1: Intravitreal Ranibizumab 0.5mg + PDT
Group 2: Intravitreal Ranizumab 0.5mg + sham PDT

 

Ranibizumab protocol: q4weekly x 3 then PRN
PDT/sham PDT protocol: PDT/sham PDT on Day 1 then PRN

At 12 months, mean BCVA improvement from baseline was 8.3 letters with combination therapy vs 5.1 letters with monotherapy

 

Combination therapy was also superior to monotherapy in achieving complete polyp regression the combination therapy group received a median of 4.0 ranibizumab injections compared with 7.0 in the monotherapy group
