Main finding: There was no difference in suboptimal surgical outcome between Lateral Rectus Recession versus Unilateral Recess and Resect for Basic-Type Intermittent Exotropia.

 

  • Purpose: To compare outcomes of bilateral lateral rectus recession vs unilateral rectus recession combined with medial rectus resection in the same eye for intermittent XT
  • Type: Randomized controlled Trial
  • Condition: Intermittent Exotropia

Participants: Children aged 3 to <11 years with intermittent exotropia (basic type)

 

n=197 patients

 

Intervention:

 

Group 1: Bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLRc)
Group 2: Unilateral lateral rectus recession combined with medial rectus resection in the same eye (R&R)

The authors did not find a statistically significant difference in suboptimal surgical outcome between children with IXT treated with BLRc compared with those treated with R&R at 3 years.
