Main finding: Atropine or patching resulted in similar visual improvement in the amblyopic eye at 17 weeks.

Purpose: To compare patching and atropine as treatments for moderate amblyopia in children aged 7 to 12 years old.
Type: Randomized controlled Trial
Condition: Amblyopia

Participants: Children aged 7 to < 13 years old with amblyopia (Strabismic, anisometropic, or both)
-VA in amblyopic eye 20/40-20/100
-VA in sound eye 20/25 or better

n=419 patients

Intervention:

Group 1: Patching (2hours/day, may be increased to 4hours/day)
Group 2: Atropine 1% (once daily)

Visual acuity improvement in both groups met the criteria for equivalence (7.6 letters vs 8.6 letters) at 17 weeks.
