Main finding: In patient with intermediate AMD, subthreshold nanosecond laser (SNL) did not significantly slow progression rate to late AMD. A post hoc analysis however showed SNL may slow progression in patients without coexistent reticular pseudodrusen, and may be inappropriate in patients with the latter.
Purpose: To evaluate the safety of SNL treatment in intermediate AMD and its efficacy for slowing progression to late AMD.
Study type: Randomized clinical trial
Condition: AMD (intermediate severity)
Participants: ≥50yo with intermediate AMD (at least 1 druse more than 125 μm in diameter), BCVA 20/40 or better
n=292
Intervention:
Group 1: Subthreshold nanosecond laser (Retinal Rejuvenation Therapy)
Group 2: Sham
Progression to late AMD was not slowed significantly with SNL treatment compared with sham.
A post hoc analysis however showed progression was slowed in participants without coexistent reticular pseudodrusen at baseline, and an increased progression rate in participants with reticular pseudodrusen.
