Main finding: Femtosecond laser was not superior to phacoemulsification in cataract surgery and had higher costs, therefore had no additional benefit for patients or health-care systems.

 

  • Purpose: To compare the outcomes in cataract surgery of Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and phacoemulsification cataract surgery

Participants: ≥22yo, eligible for unilateral/bilateral cataract surgery

Intervention:

 

Group 1: Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery
Group 2: phacoemulsification cataract surgery

There was no significant difference in the success rate of surgery between both groups.

 

The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was €10 703 saved per additional patient who had treatment success with phacoemulsification cataract surgery compared with Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.
