Main finding: Topical corticosteroids may be associated with improved long-term clinical outcomes (visual acuity) in bacterial corneal ulcers not caused by Nocardia species.
Purpose: To determine whether there is a benefit in clinical outcomes with the use of topical corticosteroids as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of bacterial corneal ulcers.
Group 1: Topical steroids (prednisolone sodium phosphate 1% – QID for 1 week, BD for 1 week, OD for 1 week, stop)
Group 2: placebo
Corticosteroid use was associated with a mean 1-line VA improvement in non-Nocardia ulcers (no difference in VA in Nocardia ulcers).
Corticosteroid use was associated with larger mean scar size in Nocardia ulcers.

Main finding: Adjunctive topical corticosteroids had no superiority to placebo in VA and scar size at 3 months, except in patients with baseline BCVA count fingers or worse or central ulcers.
