Main finding: A binocular iPad game was not superior to part-time patching, and was possibly worse in teenagers aged 13 to 16 years old with amblyopia.
Purpose: To compare visual acuity outcomes in amblyopia treated with a binocular iPad game vs part-time patching in teenagers aged 13-16 years old.
Type: Randomized controlled Trial
Condition: Amblyopia
Participants: Teenagers aged 13-16 years, Amblyopia (strabismic, anisometropic or both)
-Amblyopic eye VA 20/40-20/400
-Sound eye VA 20/25 or better
-Interocular acuity difference ≥3 LogMAR lines
n=100 patients
Intervention:
Group 1: Binocular falling blocks iPad game (1 hour/day)
Group 2: Patching sound eye (2hours/day)
VA improvement favoured patching at 16 weeks (mean VA improved 6.5 letters vs 3.5 letters).
Treatment adherence in the iPad group device was poor; only 13% of participants completed >75% of prescribed treatment.
