Main finding: Phakic patients undergoing scleral buckling surgery had superior BCVA improvement. No difference in BCVA was demonstrated in the pseudophakic trial, but there was better anatomic outcome in the pars plana vitrectomy group.

 

  • Purpose: To compare scleral buckling surgery and primary pars plana vitrectomy in rhegmatogenous retinal detachments of medium complexity.

Participants: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

 

  • n=416 (phakic trial), 265 (pseudophakic trial)

 

Intervention:

 

Group 1: Scleral buckling surgery
Group 2: Pars plana vitrectomy

Phakic trial:

-Mean BCVA change was significantly greater in the SB group.
-Cataract progression was greater in the PPV group

 

Pseudophakic trial:

 

-There was no significant difference in BCVA
-Primary anatomic success rate was significantly better and secondary surgeries lower in the PPV group.
